Golden Gate Bridge

in Science

Building the Golden Gate Bridge was a mammoth task in the 1930s. The bridge connects San Francisco to Marin Country in California, US. The region is well known for its strong winds, fogs and earthquakes. Despite the odds, the enterprising engineer Joseph Strauss was confident that his design would withstand both the forcesm of nature and the test of time First, the towers were set up. The north pier supporting the tower was built on a solid rock layer. The pier on the San Francisco side posed a special challenge, though. The engineers had to build it in the open ocean, about 343 m from the shore and 30 m below the water. Once the towers were completed, the cables were slung from them. Completed in a little over 4 years, the historical Golden Gate Bridge opened to the public in 1937. Today, it is one of the most recognized structures in the world.
