Temple of Artemis

in Wonders

The temple dedicated to Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting, was built in 800 BC. Afterwards it was rebuilt several times. The one that is regarded among the Seven Wonder was built by Croesus, the king of Lydia. When Croesus invaded Ephesus in 550 BC, the temple was destroyed during the battle. Upon conquering Ephesus, Croesus offered to rebuild the temple. The new temple was built entirely of marble. People from far and wide flocked to see this architectural marvel. The glory, however, did not last long. In 356 BC, disaster struck the temple. On the night of July 21, Herostratus, a young Greek who sought fame at all costs, burned the temple down. Legend says that on that night Artemis was too busy overseeing the birth of Alexander the Great to protect her temple.
